In late 2013 and early 2014, the City of New York began the process of replacing the hundreds of thousands of decades-old sodium-vapor streetlamps (recognizable by their orange glow) with new, hyper-white LED lights. By 2017, city officials expect that all streetlamps in all five boroughs of New York City will have been updated with the new lights. Although greatly decreased in number, some sodium-vapor streetlamps remain in the New York City as of 2020.
