In late 2013 and into 2014, the City of New York began the process of replacing the hundreds of thousands of decades-old sodium-vapor streetlamps (recognizable by their orange glow) with new, hyper-white LED lights. By 2017, city officials expect that all streetlamps in all five boroughs of New York City will have been updated with the new lights.
